Placenames of Strathnairn

Place names provide all sorts of information about a locality – describing not just physical features, but also giving social and economic clues to an area. The following list was presented to the Gaelic Society of Inverness by the Rev. Dr.John Macpherson, formerly parish minister of Daviot and Dunlichity, on 11th March 1955. You should find most of the place names on the Ordnance Survey maps of the area. They are overwhelmingly of Gaelic origin although a number of earlier Pictish names still remain.
